Alligator Alcatraz: Is this really happening in the U.S.?!

As you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.
— Matthew 25:40

  • Why isn’t it okay to put Jesus in a cage? (with 31 other men, and 3 open toilets that are often backed up and leaking sewage on the floor)

Credible Reporting on Alligator Alcatraz

  • Unannouced visit in April 2026 by Florida representative to Alligator Alcatraz:

After an unannounced visit to the facility, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz described it as a “monument to cruelty.” Wasserman Schultz said it is not an exagerration to describe the living quarters as “cages”; it’s simply what they are. (Rep. Schultz introduced the No Cages in the Everglades Act in the House last summer, but it never became law.) She described seeing 1,500 detainees housed in cages at the site, a cage area that smelled like urine, and a cage configuration where detainees’ only option is to go to the bathroom in front of everyone. According to Rep. Schultz, “it’s a vile, disgusting place that you would never want anyone you care about to spend five minutes in, let alone be warehoused in cages there.”

  • Miami Herald Report: In spite of court orders mandating access to communication with lawyers, in early April communication was cut off. When detainees complained, violence from the guards ensued, including beatings and entire cages being pepper sprayed.

  • Bipartisan Visit of Alligator Alcatraz: In spite of regulations allowing unannounced prison visits for oversight, originally lawmakers were not allowed to visit the facility unannounced. During the visit prepared for them, these representatives were not allowed to see sections where detainees were held, but they saw the cages built to hold 32 men.

  • Associated Press Report: Detainees report worms in the food, floors flooded with fecal waste, mosquitos and other insects everywhere.
